It is estimated that, Africa will have a larger workforce than China, and by 2050, it will have the largest workforce in the world. One billion people will need jobs, which will primarily depend on accessibility to higher education and skill building opportunities where India can play a major role by providing quality and affordable education/industry based skills and make them job market ready.    

India ranks among the top five destinations for African students for higher education as more than 25,000 Africans students are studying in 500 public and private universities across India. Besides focused programmes by private universities, Government of India has also taken initiatives such as ITEC courses, Study in India programme to provide affordable higher education/ technical education  to students from Africa and other developing countries. While there are several initiative to promote higher education, there is a need to further deepen the existing collaborations between India and Africa in the following areas :

  • Promote Online and Distance education programmes offered by universities in India.
  • Discuss Career based vocational education programmes suitable for the job market in Africa.
  • Sensitise students on affordable courses offered by Indian universities
  • Discuss the regulatory issues, quality of education, trade barriers, joint research programs with African universities.
